Memorial Day Camping in Ancient Redwoods: 🌲 Hike Among World's Tallest Trees 🥾 Kayak Humboldt Bay 🦅 + Explore Eel River 🌊

Some of the oldest living things on Earth are waiting for us in Humboldt County — and we're going to spend Memorial Day weekend right in the heart of them. We'll hike through the world's largest remaining old-growth coastal redwood forest, explore the South Fork Eel River and kayak Humboldt Bay on a guided eco-tour past wildlife refuges, egret rookeries and harbor seals. This is big-nature camping at its finest — and we're bringing the whole family.
Three nights, four days — pack your sense of adventure. This is one of our most epic trips yet! 🌲
WHAT WE'LL ENJOY 🥳🥳🥳
🌲🌲🌲 WALK AMONG ANCIENT GIANTS: We're talking trees that were alive before Columbus, some soaring over 300 feet tall. The forest here is otherworldly — open understory, cathedral light, and a trail that feels like stepping into a fairytale. We'll also visit a grove that's home to some of the most spectacular individual trees in the park.
🚣🦅🦭 KAYAK HUMBOLDT BAY: A guided eco-tour takes us past the ancestral home of the Wiyot people, ancient shell mounds, the world-famous egret rookery and harbor seals lounging in the sun. Bald eagles and Great Blue Herons are a real possibility — this is one of the most spectacular paddles in Northern California.
🏊🪨🐸 EXPLORE + PLAY AT THE EEL RIVER: The South Fork Eel River runs right alongside our campsite — great for wading and rock skipping on a warm afternoon. We'll also visit a sandy river beach right across from Founder's Grove for a proper swim.
🔍🏅 EARN NATURE STICKERS: Kids can become a Forest Floor Detective, Tree Time Traveler, Redwood Artist, Water Engineer, Acorn Fridge Builder, Log Hotel Inspector, and Mad Plant Scientist — and earn a sticker for each one in their nature journal. Between adventures, camp comes alive with some seriously fun nature challenges. Flip logs to find hidden worlds underneath, figure out how old a 300-foot redwood actually is, make bark art, build a fog catcher and an acorn fridge, and more. The perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon in the redwoods.
🚗✨ CLASSIC ROADSIDE WONDER: Just minutes from camp and right on our way home Monday, there's a beloved NorCal roadside attraction that has been delighting families for generations — one of those only-in-California moments that the kids will be talking about for years. We'll stop on the way out.
🦌🦅🦝 WILDLIFE ALL AROUND: Keep your eyes open for black-tailed deer, chipmunks, raccoons, ospreys, red-tailed hawks, and bald eagles throughout the weekend — plus seals and egrets out on the water.
🔥🍫 CLASSIC CAMPING FUN: Campfire, stories, s'mores, stargazing and quality time away from screens in one of the most beautiful settings in California.
🌿♻️ LEAVE NO TRACE ADVENTURE: We'll learn how to be responsible outdoor explorers and protect these ancient forests for future generations.
