Experience a ONCE-A-YEAR coastal adventure at Point Reyes National Seashore! Stay in a cozy hostel and embark on an extraordinary day trip on Jan. 3 during an extreme low tide — one of only a couple times per year when hidden sea caves, dramatic rock keyholes and a massive 100-foot sinkhole are accessible! Explore incredible tidepools and enjoy quality family time on one of California's most spectacular coastlines.

This is our idea of SUMMER CAMP for kids, but it's for families and we get to explore different parks! You will make wonderful memories with your family and friends 🏕️❤️🫂🤲🏽!!
NOTE: The hike to the sea caves/tidepools/sinkhole is 5.4 miles round trip. Sounds like a lot but many families with kids ranging from babies to pre-teens have done it! We make many stops for snacks, lunch and to explore the caves, tidepools and sinkhole!! The beach is pretty flat and the sand is packed/compact so you could roll a wagon or jogging stroller that DOES NOT have a lot of stuff in it. I have jogging strollers to loan.
VERTIGO/HEIGHT CONSIDERATION: To reach the sinkhole and sea caves, we need to scale down a rock wall that's 8-10 feet high (depending on how much sand the winter storms have washed away). Dozens of families have done this over the last few years! FAS scouts the route beforehand and identifies the best ways down — usually 3 different options. Many families with kids of all ages have completed this, including babies (we carefully pass infants down), and Miranda has done it despite having vertigo. However, if looking down from heights triggers your vertigo, this part may not be for you. You'll still see beautiful tidepools with sea stars, a stunning beach, and possibly a lone elephant seal before this section, but the sinkhole and sea caves — the absolute highlights — are beyond the rock wall.

Due to liability, all participants must complete the sign-up form in advance. We cannot accept anyone who shows up without prior registration. There is NO CELL SIGNAL at the trailhead, so the form cannot be completed on-site.
Day Trippers Fee
Day trip is Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, starting at 11:30 AM
EARLY BIRD 🐦 FAS FEE: $125 per family* per day ($160 if book after Dec. 7) EARLY BIRD 🐦 MMH FEE: $100 for single-income family ($135 if book after Dec. 7)
Family means you, your partner and kids.
*NOTE: After 1 kid, $10 charge for each additional child to cover treats + educational materials.

MAKE-UP DAY: If FAS determines that the weather or other conditions prevent the day trip from going forward, Saturday, Jan. 31, will be the make-up day since there will be suitable low-tide conditions again that day. There will be no credit transfer for this outing. If make-up day isn’t needed, Jan. 31 make-up day will not be held.

Difficulty Level: Easy-Moderate
EASY: The hike on the beach is on mostly compact sand that you can roll a wagon/stroller over up until about 2 miles in. We then have to leave the strollers/wagons once we start to reach areas that are rocky
MODERATE: There are rocks to scramble over plus some slippery surfaces on tidepools so we'll need to proceed with caution and wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Additionally, there's an 8-10 foot rock wall to scale down to access the sinkhole and sea caves (see height/vertigo consideration note above)

Lodge Accommodations
We have sold out of the bunkhouse but booked an extra room — a private family room with shared bath — for four people in another lodge building near the bunkhouse. If you’d like the private family room, please email: miranda@mommymehiking.com

Sleeps 4 people (one double bed + one bunk bed)
Shared bathroom with one other room
Access to large, fully equipped communal kitchen, dining and living room for exclusive use by Laguna House guests (only 4 rooms total in the building)
Two-night stay required (weekend minimum for the lodge)
Cost: $520 for the two-night stay

Weather
January brings cooler coastal weather with daytime temps typically in the mid-50s to low 60s, while nights can drop into the low 40s.
This is the rainy season, so there's always a chance of precipitation and coastal winds.
I'll be keeping an eye on the weather and will advise you as we get closer to the trip.
