Jan. 2-4, 2026: Point Reyes Cave with a Skylight, Sea Caves & Epic Tidepools at Low Tide (HOSTEL/DAY TRIP)

from $0.00

Friday, Jan. 2 โ€” Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026

Experience a ONCE-A-YEAR coastal adventure at Point Reyes National Seashore! Stay in a cozy hostel and embark on an extraordinary day trip on Jan. 3 during an extreme low tide โ€” one of only a couple times per year when hidden sea caves, dramatic rock keyholes and a massive 100-foot sinkhole are accessible! Explore incredible tidepools and enjoy quality family time on one of California's most spectacular coastlines.

WHAT WE'LL ENJOY ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ

  • ๐ŸŒŠโ›ฐ๏ธ Explore hidden sea caves and dramatic arched rock keyholes that are only accessible during extreme low tides โ€” a truly rare opportunity!

  • ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Discover a stunning 100-foot cave with a STUNNING SKYLIGHT carved into the coastal cliffs โ€” an absolutely jaw-dropping natural wonder

  • ๐Ÿฆ€โญ Explore incredible tidepools teeming with sea stars, crabs, anemones, mussels + more marine life

  • ๐Ÿ–๏ธโ˜€๏ธ Hang out on a beautiful Point Reyes beach with your family and soak in the coastal scenery

  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿซ Beach bonfire with s'mores roasting โ€” beach fires are allowed here!

  • ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ›๏ธ A spot left for ONE FAMILY in the 20-person bunkhouse. We also have a private family room for four people available!

  • ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Enjoy a scavenger hunt with your kids and educational activities for families

  • ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Arts-and-craft station for the kids plus a special treat to take home!

  • ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ Community, friendship and support: Instant 'playdate' for your kiddos! We usually have kids from toddlers up to tweens join, with all of the kids playing together! You might see old FAS friends + hopefully make some new ones, too! FAS offers all kinds of support โ€” we got you!

This is our idea of SUMMER CAMP for kids, but it's for families and we get to explore different parks! You will make wonderful memories with your family and friends ๐Ÿ•๏ธโค๏ธ๐Ÿซ‚๐Ÿคฒ๐Ÿฝ!!

NOTE: The hike to the sea caves/tidepools/sinkhole is 5.4 miles round trip. Sounds like a lot but many families with kids ranging from babies to pre-teens have done it! We make many stops for snacks, lunch and to explore the caves, tidepools and sinkhole!! The beach is pretty flat and the sand is packed/compact so you could roll a wagon or jogging stroller that DOES NOT have a lot of stuff in it. I have jogging strollers to loan.

VERTIGO/HEIGHT CONSIDERATION: To reach the sinkhole and sea caves, we need to scale down a rock wall that's 8-10 feet high (depending on how much sand the winter storms have washed away). Dozens of families have done this over the last few years! FAS scouts the route beforehand and identifies the best ways down โ€” usually 3 different options. Many families with kids of all ages have completed this, including babies (we carefully pass infants down), and Miranda has done it despite having vertigo. However, if looking down from heights triggers your vertigo, this part may not be for you. You'll still see beautiful tidepools with sea stars, a stunning beach, and possibly a lone elephant seal before this section, but the sinkhole and sea caves โ€” the absolute highlights โ€” are beyond the rock wall.

SIGN-UP REQUIREMENT:
Due to liability, all participants must complete the sign-up form in advance. We cannot accept anyone who shows up without prior registration. There is NO CELL SIGNAL at the trailhead, so the form cannot be completed on-site.

  • EASY: The hike on the beach is on mostly compact sand that you can roll a wagon/stroller over up until about 2 miles in. We then have to leave the strollers/wagons once we start to reach areas that are rocky

MODERATE: There are rocks to scramble over plus some slippery surfaces on tidepools so we'll need to proceed with caution and wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Additionally, there's an 8-10 foot rock wall to scale down to access the sinkhole and sea caves (see height/vertigo consideration note above)
