You and your family are in for such a treat! We're heading out for a KING TIDE - one of the lowest tides of the year! This magical phenomenon only happens a few times annually when the moon, Earth, and sun align to create the strongest gravitational pull. What does this mean? Tide pools that are usually underwater will be completely exposed, revealing a hidden underwater world your kids have never seen before!

We're meeting in the afternoon since that's when the tide will be at its lowest!

WHAT TO EXPECT:

⭐🦀🦭🐚🔮🦪🪸 EPIC KING TIDE TIDEPOOLING: This is hands-down one of the BEST tidepooling spots in the Bay Area! We'll explore tide pools teeming with life:

  • ⭐ Ochre sea stars slowly hunting their prey

  • 🦀 Hermit crabs, bat stars, and giant green anemones

  • 🔮 Purple sea urchins and moonglow anemones in the surfgrass flats

  • 🐌 Gumboot chitons (they're HUGE!) and elegant nudibranchs

  • 🦭 Harbor seals (maybe, and we have to keep our distance)

🌲🌲🌲 ENCHANTED CYPRESS FOREST + TUNNEL: Before we hit the tidepools, we'll explore a mystical Monterey Cypress grove with an incredible tree tunnel! It's like stepping into a fairy tale.

🦅🦉🐦 BIRDING & RAPTORS: Keep your eyes to the sky! We'll look for shorebirds, pelicans, gulls, great blue herons, cormorants, and red-tailed hawks. Once we even saw an osprey flying with a fish caught in its talons!

🌅📸🌊 SUNSET TIDEPOOLING: We'll be tidepooling 90 minutes before sunset for optimal viewing - bring your nice camera for stunning coastal sunset shots!

🔍 SCAVENGER HUNT: Embark on a fun scavenger hunt through the tidepools and forest!!!

🍽️🍕🍔 DINNER AFTER: For those interested, we can grab an early dinner together at a local spot! Stay tuned for details.

DIFFICULTY: Easy short hike before heading down to the beach. Note: There are stairs to the beach (not stroller accessible), so best to bring a front- or backpack carrier for babies/toddlers.

  • EASY, short 1-mile hike. Strollers can be used but there is a staircases down to the beach. For toddlers and infants, ackpack/front-facing carriers are recommended on the tidepools, which can be slippery (we’ll guide you along dry spots where you can see marine life). 

  • SATURDAY, 2 PM: Meet in the parking lot and hike through tree tunnel. Climb on many cool and fallen trees. Head to stunning viewpoint overlooking the ocean and look for harbor seals. Afterward, head over to tidepools and explore. At sunset, head over to local restaurant if you’d like to join us for dinner!

  • EVERY 10TH: For every 10th family who signs up for this outing, we can welcome a family for free. This is geared toward low income families. We don't check income; this is an honor system. If you want to join under the EVERY 10TH program, please write EVERY 10TH in the payment section. When deciding, we will give priority (among other factors) to those who have never joined an outing to ensure that everyone gets a chance to attend.
